Our Name

For close to 500 years, the name Gresham has stood for exemplary service, the preservation of wealth, and trusted counsel for leaders.

Everything we believe in today.

Gresham Partners, LLC takes its name from Sir Thomas Gresham (1519-1579), financier, advisor to three British monarchs, and the founder of the Royal Exchange.
In his own time, Gresham was known for his decades-long and loyal service to the Crown in a variety of capacities.

He was instrumental in preserving the value of the English coinage, the inherent store of wealth of a country and its citizens. As the Royal Factor in Antwerp, a post he held for more than 20 years, Gresham raised large sums of money for King Edward VI, maintained a rate of exchange favorable to English currency and advised the crown on money matters. Gresham advised Elizabeth I on how to restore and maintain the purity of the coinage that had been debased during the reign of earlier monarchs.

Gresham had a wide range of interests, well beyond the financial sphere. He was a mercer, a dealer in fine textiles, a banker and a goldsmith. As much a public servant as a business man, he served as Ambassador to the Regent of the Netherlands, then the financial capital of Europe, and was sent on a number of sensitive diplomatic missions.
