Whispers from the Grave – The Gentle Influence of Letters of Wishes

Kim Kamin, Chief Wealth Strategist at Gresham Partners LLC, presented a keynote on “Whispers from the Grave – The Gentle Influence of Letters of Wishes” at the Mastering Multigenerational Wealth Conference in Orlando, Florida for families and their advisors on October 9, 2025.

A Letter of Wishes is a non-binding side document to provide additional information to help fiduciaries and other powerholders while interpreting and administering trusts and other estate planning instruments. Such communications from a trust’s creator can provide an important opportunity to clarify the creator’s intentions, even from beyond the grave. On the other hand, if done poorly, such a document can produce chaos and even litigation. This presentation was designed to help UHNW clients in the development, communication, and use of Letters of Wishes. Some of the specific topics included: what is a Letter of Wishes, how do such documents come up with clients during the planning process, how are the letters designed, and more.
